Vehicles for Charity

Background on Vehicles for Charity

Vehicles for Charity (VFC) is a comprehensive vehicle donation program that was established in 2001 to provide prompt and professional disposition of donated vehicles. It is a program of ARC Thrift Stores, a Colorado 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves as the fundraising arm of ARC Units, which provide advocacy and support for developmentally disabled individuals and families.

VFC has working agreements with carefully selected tow companies and auto auctions to ensure the success of the program. Based on its success, VFC has entered into partnerships with other nonprofit organizations, such as the Colorado Women’s Education Foundation (CWEF), to help with their fundraising efforts. This unique program is all about nonprofits helping each other generate much-needed funding.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Can I Donate?

You can donate most any vehicle, including cars, trucks, boats, motorcycles, and recreational vehicles. Your vehicle does not have to be currently running, and its condition will determine whether it is sold at auction or to salvage.

Is My Donation Tax-Deductible?

Yes, all donations made to CWEF are tax-deductible. CWEF is a nonprofit organization, and all donations qualify as a charitable deduction on your federal income tax return.

What Do I Need to Donate My Car?

The title to the car must be in your name, and VFC will need some information about where the car is located and its condition. This information will help VFC schedule appropriate towing arrangements.

Will You Pick Up My Car?

A towing company will call you to schedule the pick-up of your vehicle. You will need to give the driver the keys to the vehicle, as well as your signed title.

How Is the Value of My Car Determined?

The IRS allows you to take a charitable tax deduction on your federal income tax form equal to the amount the vehicle sells for at auction, unless it sells for less than $500. If your vehicle sells for less than $500, you may deduct no more than $500. If your vehicle sells for more than $500, you will need to include IRS Form 1098C, which VFC will supply after your vehicle sells. If you have any questions about your deduction, we recommend consulting your tax advisor.

Donating your vehicle to CWEF through VFC is a great way to support nonprofits and give back to your community. It’s easy, tax-deductible, and helps nonprofits generate much-needed funding.
